3 Ways How Not to Be a Grasshopper – Numbers 13 Bible Devotional

Talk about an eye-catching headline? Numbers 13:33 really got my attention!

We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Numbers 13:33 (NIV)

Why the Bible is a living Word

Before I get into the grasshopper story, let me share why I’m doing what I’m doing. I spent 30 hours per week on everything Clueless Journal – from the website, to Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook Group. Plus creating a weekly bible journal workbook that has actionable bible journal prompts for bible chapters, cover to cover.

Why do I bother?

Because the joy of knowing that God cares about you is something that I must share 🧡 Nothing beats that moment when the bible ‘speaks’ to you – when the very words that you need for comfort and guidance show up in front of you, and you know that God knows what you’re going through.

Back to Grasshopper – Numbers 13:33

When I was reading Numbers 13, my day wasn’t going well. It was a period when I knew I would be going back to corporate, and office was already calling. Suddenly, all my fears returned:

  • Is my boss expecting me to reply emails over the weekend?
  • What if things are a mess and I can’t get it in order, no matter how many hours I put in?
  • What will happen to Clueless Journal? Is my dream of sharing that the bible is a living word going to die?
  • What if 10 years later and I’m still going through this?

And then came the Grasshopper verse!

I immediately related to the scared Israelites – seeing themselves as grasshoppers and forgetting how great is their God.

Focus on the Positive

Trust in Your Strength (from God)

Put on Accurate Lens

Focus on the Positive

Have you ever saw something good and then rationalize that it can’t happen for you? Read this:

“We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large..

Numbers 13: 27, 28 (NIV)

I find it almost uncanny because that’s how I think! For instance, do you have thoughts like:

  • This opportunity is too good to be true, I shouldn’t explore.
  • If I really start my business, I will fail.
  • Other couples have great communication, it will never happen for me..

Here’s a journal prompt for you:

How can I focus on the positive, trusting that when I put one foot in front of the other, good things will happen for me? Plus, I have God.

#1 Journal Prompt for Mindset

Trust in Your Strength (from God)

In verse 30, Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

How was he so sure? He had faith in God – God promised, and so it will be done.

Here’s the second journal prompt for you:

Even when the task is huge, God is able. But I have to take action to claim my better life. What 3 actions can I take to claim this promise? (Check out all the free planners in the shop)

#2 Journal Prompt on Action
God will protect Isaiah 41 Bible Verse

Put on Accurate Lens

Why did the Israelites see themselves as grasshoppers? Something is wrong with the lens they use to view their circumstance.

  1. They grossly exaggerate in their mind how big the enemy was and how small they themselves were
  2. Just because they feared, they lied to instill more fear to justify their decision
  3. They failed to see God who is bigger than all their challenges

Here’s another journal prompt for you:

Starting is hard. Pursuing something great is harder. How can I see the challenges as they are and work out a solution to tackle them?

#3 Journal Prompt on Grit

At the end of it all, it’s the journey that matters.

Try journaling through the above 3 prompts. With free-form journaling, let the doubts surface and then choose an affirmation and action to remove these doubts. And of course, lots of prayer! Don’t forget to check out the shop for free planners.

Having Faith to Live your Best Life

Numbers 13 Journaling Prompt

What is the limiting belief that you have when it comes to good things happening for you?

What is one affirmation that you can meditate on to counter this unbelief?

God, many days I am fearful. Of bad things happening to me, big and small. Of detours, roadblocks and challenges that will prove insurmountable. Open my eyes to see that you are right beside me, fighting my battles as I seek Your will, amen.
