What is the 3C Bible Journaling Framework?

Have you ever opened your Bible, read a passage, and walked away wondering what it really meant or why it didn’t seem to speak to your situation?

You’re not alone. Many Christians deeply desire to grow in faith, but quietly wrestle with questions like:

  • Why can’t I hear from God when I read the Bible?
  • What does it mean for Scripture to be “a living Word”?
  • How do I truly walk with God in my daily life? (and if I’m not… am I really following Jesus?)

If these questions resonate with you, you’re in the right place.

The 3C Bible Journaling Framework is a simple, reflective way to move from just reading Scripture to truly experiencing it. Whether you’re feeling spiritually dry or just unsure where to start, this framework helps you slow down, notice, and respond to what God is revealing through His Word.

By journaling with intention, you’ll learn to:

  • Clue – Recognize when a verse speaks to your spirit
  • ContemplateReflect deeply on what God is revealing to you
  • CommitRespond with a meaningful step of faith in your daily life

Whether you’re new to Bible journaling or looking to deepen your quiet time, the 3C Framework helps create space for God’s Word to come alive and deepen your faith.

You don’t need a theology degree. You don’t need hours of free time.
You just need a willing heart, an open mind and a simple structure as your guide.

Let’s move beyond feeling clueless in our faith.
Let’s learn how to listen when God speaks through His Word.

How the 3C Bible Journaling Framework Works

CLUE – The Scripture Will Find You

Begin by reading the Bible slowly and with expectation. If something catches your attention e.g. a phrase, a word, or a thought, that may be your “clue” to pause. God might be highlighting something just for you.

  • 📖 Read slowly and attentively
  • ✍️ Underline or write down words that stir something in your spirit
  • 🙏 Ask: Why is this standing out to me?

Your journal entry can simply begin by writing down the verse or part of the passage that stood out.

CONTEMPLATE – Let the Word Speak

Now that a verse or phrase has caught your attention, it’s time to sit with it. Ask God what He is saying through that Scripture and how it relates to your life right now. This is where the living Word begins to speak personally and powerfully.

  • 🧠 Reflect: What is God saying to me through this verse?
  • 💬 Consider: How does this relate to my current situation, struggles, or prayers?
  • 💡 Notice: Are there any patterns, repetitions, or themes I’m seeing?
  • 📝 Write: Begin journaling your thoughts, questions, or what you sense God is revealing.

Your journal entry can be a few honest sentences of reflection e.g. what you noticed, what you’re wondering or how the verse connects to your day.

COMMIT – Walk in the Word

Sometimes, the biggest shift happens not in what we learn but in how we respond. In this final step, prayerfully consider how to live out what you’ve just reflected on, even if it’s just one small act of obedience.

  • 📌 Take a moment to ask: How is God inviting me to respond?
  • 🪧 It could be a change in mindset, a prayer, a specific action, or simply choosing to trust Him in a new way.
  • 🗓️ Write down your response, even if it feels like a tiny step of faith.

Your journal entry might continue with a prayer, a personal reflection, or one clear next step you sense God is leading you to take.
